Description:

This portrait was a part of the Pride Day collection presented at the Museum of Discovery and Science, Family Pride Day (Sat. Jun 24, 2023‎), made with collaborating artist, MelissAllegories, using acrylic, acrylic fluorescents, and oil paint. Harvey Milk challenged his friend, Gilbert Baker, to create a new unforgettable symbol that could represent hope for the LGBTQ+ community; moreover, inspire and empower them to feel prideful for who they are, opposed to shamefully discreet. This led to the creation of the rainbow flag. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected American politician in the state of California, in 1977. And despite all of the hatred he received throughout his campaign and time in office, Harvey Milk continued to support the gay rights movements which advocated equal rights for LGBTQ+ people.
